Albertina

The Albertina museum was erected on one of the last remaining sections of the fortifications of Vienna. It houses one of the largest and most important graphic art collections in the world with 50.000 drawings and watercolours, as well as some 900.000 graphic art works, ranging from the Late Gothic era to the present. The palace takes its name from the collection’s founder, Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen (1738-1822), a son-in-law of Austrian Empress Maria Theresa. He is depicted in the monument in front of the museum.

Sunny Holiday

In Austria yesterday was a public holiday and, luckily, a sunny day too. My last walk of the old year was along the Old Danube and being not a very inventive person my first walk of the new year lead me once again to this stretch of water which is partially still frozen. In the background you can see the DC Tower, Donau City, the UNO City and the Donauturm.

Spoilt for Choice

That's only a selection of the cakes availabe at the "K.u.K. Hoflieranten". It was really hard to make a choice... (I'm sorry for the bad quality of the photo, I took it with my mobile phone.)

New in Town

Yesterday afternoon I treated myself to tea and cake at "K.u.K. Hoflieferanten" in the city center. This place was opened a month ago and is a joint venture of the confectionary Gerstner and the Schlumberger Winery.  In the shop on the ground floor you can purchase selected Gerstner and Schlumberger products, on the first floor you can either sit at the bar or in the lounge area. If you are lucky enough to get a seat at a window you can also enjoy a beautiful view of the Vienna State Opera.

Snowy Water Front

I wanted to publish another photo today, but then I looked out of the window and noticed that it's snowing again. So here is a photo taken during my walk along the Old Danube on New Year's Eve. I really fell in love with this stretch of water...

Volksgarten in Winter

Volksgarten is one of three parks in the very city center of Vienna (the other two are Burggarten and Stadtpark) and I often take a stroll there. The Theseus Temple always catches my eyes. The building in the background is the City Hall.

In Austria it is the custom to present friends with lucky charms (for instance horse shoes, chimney sweepers, fly agarics, ladybugs, pigs, lucky clovers) at the beginning of a new year. For those who have a sweet tooth there are even sweet lucky charms. I hope that they bring good luck to my dear readers. I'm very much looking forward to sharing with you my view of Vienna for another year!

January Theme Day: Photo of The Year

After ending the year 2014 with a December sunset, let's start the new year with a summer sunset. Regular followers know that I love to spend the summer evenings taking a ride with my bicycle and taking photos of sunsets. I have been living nearly 20 years close to the Old Danube, but I "discovered" this dead end of a former river branch of the Danube with its calm atmosphere only last summer... I'm very much looking forward to this year's summer and more cycling in this area!

December Sunset

On December 23 I happened to be in the street at the time of the sunset and the sky really put on a show. Later on I heard on the radio that these gorgeous sunsets are a December phenomenon. So this is already the last photo for 2014. This year really flew by... I hope you have nice plans for New Year's Eve and wish you a very happy New Year!

Baby, it's Cold Outside

Can you see the prevailing cold in this photo? The daily maximum temperature currently is -5°C (41° F) and you have to wrap up warmly if you want to leave your apartment. Yesterday I braved the cold and took a short walk along the Old Danube. As you can see in this photo of the DC Tower and the Donaucity, Vienna is even covered with a thin layer of snow.

Normally the 73m high Ringturm is a rather unspectacular (one could even say ugly) office building, but during Christmas time it is decorated with lights in the form of a Christmas tree.

In Vienna the merchant associations of the shopping streets have to coordinate and pay the Christmas illuminations in large part by themselves - that's why the illuminations show great variety. In this photo you can see the Christmas lights at the "Golden Quarter", the new luxury shopping area in the ciy center.

Better Late Than Never...

It's a tradition of mine to visit the Christmas Market in front of Schönbrunn Palace on Christmas day. While all the other Christmas markets close on December 23 or 24, this one is open until December 26. The palace is a very beautiful backdrop as you can see here! At the market you can find traditional handicrafts, Christmas decorations, unusual gifts as well as food and drinks. One of the stands offers bees wax products.

Merry Christmas!

In Austria we are celebrating Christmas this very night: The tree is set up and lit for the very first time, the presents are placed beneath the tree, the family gathers around the tree and usually sings Christmas carols. The Christmas dinner traditionally consists of baked carp. I wish you all a very merry Christmas!! Frohe Weihnachten!!

It is High Time...

... to buy the Christmas tree, even if in Austria we usually decorate it not until Christmas Eve.

Another Christmas Market

The Christmas Market in front of the city hall with its 150 sales stands is Vienna's biggest Christmas market. Yesterday I passed by at 4 p.m., and as you can see, it was well attended.

If you need a change from the traditional Christmas Markets that dominate the city-scape elsewhere, the MuseumsQuartier Wien is the perfect address: During "Winter in the MQ" (until December 23) the MQ restaurateurs serve up unusual punch varieties and delicious treats in so-called "ice pavilions", DJs provide a diverse mix of music, there's an ice curling rink and a race track for remote-controlled cars, and video projections on the facades bathe the MuseumsQuartier in a very special light.

Unfortunately it's not easy to find beautifully decorated shop windows in Vienna. This one at least says "Merry Christmas"...

Winter Sunset

Usually I'm still in the office when the sun sets in winter, but yesterday I called it a day early to do some Christmas shopping. When I saw the beautiful sky above the shopping street, I quickly went to a park nearby to take some photographs. I wasn't the only one to do this, the social media were flooded with photos of the spectacular sky.

At the Empress' Feet

After a visit at the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Fine Arts) you currently can have a walk around the Christmas Village at Maria Theresien Platz. With the Kunsthistorisches Museum on one side, the Natural History Museum on the other side and a statue depicting Empress Maria Theresa in the center of the square this is an impressive location.

Last Sunday I went to see the excellent Velázquez exhibition at the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Fine Arts). On my way out I passed the corridor that leads to the collection of Greek and Roman Antiquities.

Vanillekipferl

Vanillekipferl are small, crescent shaped biscuits, usually made with ground almonds or hazelnuts, flavoured with vanilla and dusted with powdered sugar. They are traditionally made at Christmas. In the window of the K. und K. (Imperial and Royal) Court Confectionary Bakery "Demel" they are presented in a very special way.

Welcome to Vienna

During the Advent season Vienna is a very popular destination for day trips and holidays because of the numerous Christmas markets all over town. In December 2013 Vienna registered 1.153.000 overnight stays. The hotel in this photo is located in a narrow street in the city center, and of course it is festively decorated.

Carrying Home Christmas Gifts

Today is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, a public holiday with much arguing: Since 1995 the retail stores have been allowed to open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for Christmas shopping (In Austria normally stores are closed on Sundays and holidays. For more information about opening hours, please click here) and usually it is one of the best selling days during this time of the year. Many people will carry home a pile of Christmas presents...

Saint Nicholas & Krampus

In Austria today is Saint Nicholas Day. During the night Saint Nicholas filled the children's boots with gifts and sweets, and at the same time checked up on the children if they were good, polite and helpful last year. Saint Nicholas is usually accompanied by Krampus, a demon-like creature warning and punishing bad children. If the children were not good, he puts a tree branch in their boots. I remember to have been rather shocked when I got a tree branch once... No Krampus in this photo...

Supermarket of Art

Art makes you happy - that’s the motto of the Supermarket of Art. Young and well-known artists alike offer their original works for sale here. The assortment ranges from drawings to watercolors, acrylic and oil paintings to sculptures, artworks in wood, fabric, plastic or metal as well as photographs. Prices are moderate and run between € 59,- and € 330,-.

Dreary Days...

We haven't seen the sun for weeks now. The days are humid and dreary... I have to admit that by now this weather has a negative impact on my mood...

Chocolate Shop

The Viennese Chocolate Factory "Wiener Schokoladen Manufaktur Leschanz" is located in one of the oldest shops in the city (since 1844) and is specialized in high-quality-products. Almost the whole assortment is handmade in the oldest Viennese industrial park, built in the era of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.

Counting The Days

In Austria we don't only have Advent wreaths for the countdown to Christmas, but also special calendars: The Advent Calendars have 24 "windows", each of them reveals an image, a poem or a small gift such as a toy or a chocolate item. The first "window" was opened yesterday (December 1), the last will be opened on December 24 (Christmas Eve).

December Theme Day: People in Their Workplace

 

When the days are getting colder (usually in September) chestnut stalls pop up all over Vienna. These small one- or two-man stands don't only sell roasted chestnuts, but usually also roast potato slices, potato wedges and potato pancakes. Yesterday afternoon this lady had her hands full to serve the hungry walkers in Kärntnerstraße.

1st Sunday of Advent

Today is the first day of the Advent season, the "countdown" for Christmas. It is a tradition to buy (or create personally) an Advent wreath and to light the candles on every Sunday - on the first Sunday one candle, on the second two candles and so on, until on the last Sunday before Christmas all four candles are lit.

St. Stephen's Cathedral

St. Stephen's Cathedral is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vienna and the seat of the Archbishop of Vienna. The current Romanesque and Gothic form of the cathedral was largely initiated by Duke Rudolf IV and stands on the ruins of two earlier churches. Currently it is surrounded by one of Vienna's many Christmas markets.

The Countdown is on

Some weeks ago I told you that the outdoor areas of the cafés and restaurants have to be closed on November 15. Well, I was wrong... November 30 is the last possibility to enjoy your drink or meal outside. A lot of terraces have already been dismantled, but last Sunday some people still braved the autumnal temperature.

The Three Hussars

"The Three Hussars" was a glamorous restaurant in the city center. It was founded after World War I by Count Paul Pälffy and two other hussar officers and quickly became an important meeting place for the Viennese society. In 2010 the restaurant went bankrupt, but the sign is still there...

Put Your Wool Hat on

Somebody was worried that the "The Young Athlete", a bronze statue in Volksgarten might have cold and gave him a wool hat. Very thoughtful!

Rust & Ivy

It's funny how sometimes the "little things" catch your eyes... On Sunday this was the case with the iyy and the rusty fence of Volksgarten.

As I told you yesterday, I visited Vienna's first skyscraper, the Hochhaus Herrengasse, during the "Open House Weekend" in September. I walked all the stairs up to the top floor and at one point I noticed all these lines and thought they would look good in a photo.

In September Vienna held its first "Open House Weekend", giving people the chance to explore the city’s amazing architecture and peek into 70 buildings normally not available to the public. I made it only to one building, the Hochhaus Herrengasse in the city center, Vienna's very first skyscraper (50m tall, erected in 1931/32) and enjoyed a beautiful view of the town.

Studying in the Park

I can read a magazine or a book in a park, but I'm easily distractible and could never study like this young man in Volksgarten.
