Never Forget

During the Pogromnacht on November 9-10, 1938 the SA paramilitary forces demolished Jewish-owned stores, buildings, cemeteries and synagogues and attacked and arrested Jews. In Vienna 18 synagogues were completely destroyed, 7 were damaged and diverted from their intended use during the Nazi period. The commemorative project "OT" now places a permanent light symbol marking where the Viennese synagogues once stood. The 5m (16,5 feet) tall light sculptures, created by Austrian artist Lukas Kaufmann, feature an intertwined, illuminated Star of David. "OT" stands for "symbol" in the Hebrew language. In Judaism this not only means a symbol, but also a visible religious feature of the relationshop between God and man.

Museum Visitor #1

During my last visit at the Albertina museum this girl caught my eyes not only because of her styling but also because of her enthusiasm for the artworks. I think she photographed every single painting in this room.

Who Stole the Sun?

We haven't seen the sun for more than a week now... I don't mind the cold, but these foggy days are really hard for me. I just want to stay at home on my couch... The fog on Sunday didn't prevent this fisherman from pursuing his hobby on the Old Danube...

Burgtheater - The Understage Area

The stage of the Burgtheater is one of the biggest theatre stages in the world: the stage portal is 12m wide, the main stage is 28,5m wide, 23m deep and 28m high. At the opening in 1888 the stage technology was already innovatory and has been modernized on many occasions. During the reconstruction after World War II, which was accomplished in 1955, a stage equipment was installed that is still revolutionary today. The revolving stage consists of a rotating cylinder (15m high, 21m diameter) and four hydraulic lifts (12 x 4m each). With the help of these technical features the scenery can be changed within 40 seconds. It is the biggest automatic and computer controlled stagesystem in Europe. In this photo you can see a part of the understage area.

Burgtheater - The Grand Staircase

The Burgtheater is the Austrian National Theatre in Vienna and one of the most important German language theatres in the world. Empress Maria Theresia ordered the creation of a theatre next to her palace in 1741, and in 1776 it was opened by her son Joseph II. In 1888 the theatre was moved to a new building designed by Gottfried Semper and Karl Freiherr von Hasenauer where it is still located. We start our visit with the gorgeous grand staircase.

A Chat in the Park

One of my favourite photo motifs is people sitting on a bench. So I couldn't resist taking a photo of these two women who braved yesterday's cold and had a snack and a chat in Augarten

Viticultural Decorations

The decorations of this doorway are clearly inspired by the viticulture. No wonder, it's located in Stammersdorf, one of the more than 20 viticultural areas of Vienna.

Pink Flowers & Autumnal Tree

I guess one day I will have taken a picture of every possible photo motif along the Old Danube... Last Sunday my favourite house (on the left side) with its flowers and the autumnal tree caught my eyes. Please click here for another photo of the white house.

Quiet Sunday Afternoon

Yesterday was one of those cloudy and misty autumn days that makes you want to just stay at home. I conquered my weaker self and did another walk along the Old Danube

Yesterday was All Saints' Day. On this day it is an Austrian tradition to go to the cemetery, decorate the graves of the deceased loved ones with flowers and light the candles.
