Distance Marks - the Austrian Way

The Austrian government did an advertising campaign on tv to "promote" the necessary distance of at least 1m to people in shops and public space. In this spot a girl describes the dimension of the distance as "as large as a baby elephant" so that really everybody gets it. No wonder that a hot dog stand decided to paint some elephants as distance marks on the pavement...

Old & New

Sometimes old and modern architecture fit together quite well... In this case I'm not sure. What do you think?

University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences

The main building of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences was erected in 1896 and is located in the 18th district. The "BOKU" as the Viennese call this univeristy (from its German name "Universität für Bodenkultur Wien") was founded in 1872 as an agricultural college. Today it is a modern, international University of Life Sciences where more than 10.000 students are enrolled.

Geymüllerschlössel #4

After the end of World War II, the ownership of the Geymüllerschlössel went again to the Austrian Natinal Bank which sold it to the Republic of Austria in 1948. In 1965 the villa was incorporated in the Museum of Applied Arts/Contemporary Art (MAK).

Geymüllerschlössel #3

In 1929 the Geymüllerschlössel was mortgaged to the Austrian National Bank. After the Nazi annexation of Austria in March 1938 the heirs of Isidor Mautner (who had died in 1930) lost all civil rights because of being Jewish and were forced to flee the country. The mortgage on the edifice was transferred to the German Reichsbank which seized the building in compensation for the outstanding debt in 1944.

Geymüllerschlössel #2

The Geymüllerschlössel remained in the possession of the Geymüller family until 1842. After that it changed owners several times until it was purchased in 1888 by the textile manufacturer Isidor Mautner. In the following decades it was a much-frequented venue for social gatherings of the local theatrical and musical scene.

Geymüllerschlössel #1

The Geymüllerschlössel  was constructed after 1808 as a “summer villa” for the merchant and banker Johann Jakob Geymüller (1760–1834). The edifice shows a blend of Gothic, Indian and Arabic styles as was common in pleasure buildings of the period. The architect is unknown to date. Today the villa is decorated with original furniture from the first half of the 19th century and a site of the Museum of Applied Arts/Contemporary Art (MAK).

Déja Vu

Did you miss me? I was on vacation and didn't have the time to publish photos here. But now I'm back, and we start with this orange bull that I discovered four years ago. During my last walk in the 18th district I noticed that he is still there. I still have no idea why he was put on the balcony...

July Theme Day: Upside Down

Well, I know, this photo isn't  very inventive, but I couldn't find a better one.... and I think squirrels are cute.

"Green" House

I love this house in Gersthoferstraße in the 18th district not only because it's beautifully overgrown with ivy, but also because of the wooden veranda.

Beautiful Mansion

I´m living on a very busy road, therefore I love to take a walk in the quiet streets of the outskirts and admire all the beautiful mansions. But you have to be careful: Some months ago, after I had taken a photo of a villa, the landlady was running after me to ask me why I was photographing her mansion. She looked at me rather incredulous when I told her that I just liked her mansion. I guess she thought that I was spying on her property...

He´s Still There

I discovered this bull for the first time in April (click here for the photo). Recently I passed again by this house and noticed that he´s still there. This time the blue door also caught my eyes (I´m a big fan of blue doors).

Ice-cream Parlour

At this time of the year you don´t know how long the warm weather will last, so you have to make the most of it and maybe treat yourself to a last cup of ice cream.
