Sunday Brunch

Yesterday I met some of my friends for a Sunday brunch. We tested a vegetarian restaurant in the 15th district, located in a former gym of the Jewish sports club SC Maccabi Wien.

Fenster Café

This is Vienna's smallest third wave coffee bar, located in the very city center. The coffee is served only through this window. The speciality of the Fenster Café is the "cornettocino", coffee in an ice-cream cornet.

French Breakfast

On Saturday I had breakfast with a friend in my favourite French café. I just love everything there!

Sweet Hell Ice Cream

Yesterday I tested a new ice cream parlor in the second district. I opted for pistachio and lemon-sage. The black cone refers to the name of the parlor: "Sweet Hell". I will definitely go back and test some other flavours. 

Saturday Breakfast

On Saturdays and Sundays I love to "celebrate" breakfast and start the day without any hurry. Usually I have breakfast at home, but this photo was taken some months ago in a french café - which explains the baguette and the croissants...

Krapfen

Krapfen are traditional Austrian carnival sweets: doughnuts made from sweet yeast dough fried in fat or oil. The "classical" version is filled with marmelade or jam with powdered sugar on top, but there are also Krapfen filled with vanilla cream (in this photo), plum butter, nougat... Today is the last day of carnival, the last possibility to indulge in these sweets.

Toast Hawaii

After having visited the exhibition about the 1970's at the castle Schallaburg, it was time for a snack. The friend who accompanied me, ordered a toast Hawaii, a popular snack in Austria in the 1970's: an open sandwich consisting of a slice of toast with ham and cheese, and a maraschino cherry in the middle of a pineapple, grilled from above, so that the cheese starts to melt.

Baked Apples

On Saturday my aunt invited some friends to celebrate the start of the Advent season. For dessert she served baked apples.

The Tasting Goes on

There are so many new ice cream parlors in town! And this summer I want to test as many as possible. Some days ago I went to a new italian ice cream parlor in the 7th district. Unfortunately they didn't have two of my favorite flavours, but I found three others that I liked a lot.

Vegan Ice Cream

I'm not vegan, but some weeks ago I ate for the first time this vegan ice cream. It was really good!

Organic Ice Cream

It's currently very hot in Vienna - the perfect excuse to cool down by eating some ice cream. "Eis Greissler" in the city center sells organic ice cream, made only from fresh ingredients without additives, some flavors are even vegan or lactose free.  The ice cream is very popular, usually there's a long waiting line...

The Well-Laid Table

Last Sunday I was invited to a pre-paschal girl's night at a friend's place. This is how the table looked like before we sat for dinner.

Bread Automat

This is Vienna's first bread vending machine, launched in October 2014. The idea is to reduce food waste: The automat works only at night and provides baking goods of a bakery nearby that have not been sold during the day. A very good idea!

December Theme Day: People in Their Workplace

 

When the days are getting colder (usually in September) chestnut stalls pop up all over Vienna. These small one- or two-man stands don't only sell roasted chestnuts, but usually also roast potato slices, potato wedges and potato pancakes. Yesterday afternoon this lady had her hands full to serve the hungry walkers in Kärntnerstraße.

July Theme Day: Celebrating Summer

Here's to a beautiful and long summer! I took this photo two years ago at the summer party of the Augarten Porcelain Museum where they served some special summer drinks. Don't ask me which ingredients this cocktail contained, I just remember that it was very good.

Pink Sushi

When the motto of a party is "la vie en pink", you don´t have to be surprised to find pink sushi at the buffet ;-)

Wiener Schnitzel is the best known speciality of Viennese cuisine. It´s a thin, breaded and deep fried cutlet from veal. In Vienna "Figlmüller", founded in 1905, is THE restaurant for the perfect schnitzel. Although Viennese-born I went there last Saturday for the very first time...

May Theme Day: Bakeries

"Alte Bäckerei" ("Old Bakery") - the name is deceptive: This is no bakery but a pub. What a pity! In Vienna it´s hard to find old-fashioned bakeries, they have been displaced by modern bakery chains...

Dining Table

Some weeks ago this new lunchroom ("Esstisch") opened vis-à-vis my office. The eatery offers light fare currys and salads. Being a curious person I went there the very first day after the opening and since then became a regular - not only because of the good salads but also because of the very motivated and friendly staff and the cool, stylish interior.
