Let's eat Krapfen!
Today is the last day of carnival, the last possibilty to indulge in "Krapfen", the traditional Austrian carnival sweets: they are dougnuts made from sweet yeast dough fried in fat or oil. The classical version is filled with marmelade or jam with powdered sugar on top, but you get them also filled with vanilla cream, plum butter, nougat...

Saint Nicholas Day
Today is Saint Nicholas Day: During the night Saint Nicholas filled the boots of the children who were good, polite and helpful during the last year with gifts and sweets. He is accompanied by Krampus, a demon-like creature who warns and punishes bad children by putting a tree branch in their boots.

Beginning of Autumn
The astronomical autumn begins today even though it has been feeling like autumn already for several days. Autumn is definitely not my favourite season, but I would love to eat this cake...

7th Blogiversary
Today this blog turns 7!! I can't believe it! I created the blog seven years ago very late in the evening (or rather early in the morning) without really knowing what I was doing, and I had no idea how I should publish 365 photos a year thinking that there weren't so many interesting things to photograph. Throughout the years I didn't manage to publish a photo every day because I was on vacation, too busy, too tired... or I published photos one or two days late, but I'm still proud that I didn't give up blogging. It is fun, but also rather time-consuming. Anyway, looking for photo subjects I experienced my hometown more attentively and discovered things never seen before. Thank you for visiting my blog and for commenting on the photos! I appreciate your support and I am looking forward to sharing more photos of Vienna with you. And now let's cut the cake and celebrate!

Football Cake
Today the Austrian team will play the second match in the 2016 UEFA European Championship. Hopefully they have better luck than some days ago (Austria 0:Hungary 2)! A candy store in the city center has created a football cake to be eaten while watching the match on tv...

6th Blogiversary!!
I can't believe how time flies! Today this blog turns 6!! I can remember the exciting moment when I published the first photo as if it were yesterday. I have to admit that I'm a little proud of keeping this blog alive for six years ;-) Sometimes it's hard to find the time to blog, but the good thing is that it helped me to experience my hometown more attentively. I would like to thank everybody who has ever visited my blog and especially those who left a comment. I appreciate your support and I am looking forward to sharing more photos of Vienna with you.

Everybody waltz!
Another window display inspired by the current ball season. I love how the petit fours are decorated and arranged as ball visitors and debutantes. At the Vienna Opera Ball, the highlight of the Viennese carnival season, the last dance of the debutantes is always the "Blue Danube" Viennese waltz by Johann Strauss II, after which the floor is opened to all guests with the words "Everybody waltz!". Please click here for a video of the debutantes' inaugural waltz at the Vienna Opera Ball.

Lucky Charms
In Austria we use to give lucky charms (for instance horse shoes, chimney sweepers, fly agarics, ladybugs, pigs, lucky clovers) to friends and family at the beginning of a new year. For those who have a sweet tooth (like me for instance) there are even sweet lucky charms... Dear readers, I hope you have a beautiful New Year's Eve! I'm very much looking forward to spending another year with you!
