Austrians started to celebrate Halloween in the 1990s, and since then it became rather popular. It's all about business, I guess. Nowadays there are a lot of Halloween parties for adults and the children do trick or treat.

In Austria we are celebrating Christmas this very night: The tree is set up and lit for the very first time, the presents are placed beneath the tree, the family gathers around the tree and usually sings Christmas carols. The Christmas dinner traditionally consists of baked carp. I wish you all a very merry Christmas!! Halloween Sweets

During my childhood and in my younger days in Austria we didn't celebrate Halloween, but since the 1990s it has gained ground and become a considerable business. For this year a turnover of € 42.000.000 is expected. In a confectionary close to my place I discovered these Halloween sweets. I still don't celebrate it, but if you do, have a happy Halloween!

Today is Valentine's Day! Did you know that it began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus? February 14th was first associated with romantic love in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In 18th-century England it finally evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery and sending greeting cards. According to a recent survey Valentine's Day matters to only one out of three Austrians. Anyway, I think these sweet hearts would be an acceptable gift ;-)

Merry Christmas!

I have just finished wrapping the Christmas presents. In Austria we are celebrating Christmas this very night: The tree is set up and lit for the very first time, the Christkind (Christ child) places the presents beneath the tree, bells announce the arrival of the Christkind into the house - when he arrives the family gathers around the tree and sings Christmas carols. The presents will be unwrapped and a lot of families will eat a baked carp for Christmas dinner.
In case you are wondering how I will spend this day: In the morning I will have brunch with some girlfriends and in the evening I will celebrate with my parents, just the three of us. No carp, but salmon.

Happy Halloween!

I recently read in the newspaper that every second Austrian under 30 celebrates Halloween. So this festivity has gained ground since my childhood when it was completely ignored... I discovered these two pumpkins last Sunday in front of a house in the 19th district, obviously the home of some youngsters. How about you? Are you celebrating Halloween?

Halloween Cake

In Austria Halloween became popular only in the 1990s. I remember being a little amazed when I saw the first pumpkin faces in the windows and gardens... But in in the meanwhile it has become a considerable business. If you have a sweet tooth, you can even buy a halloween cake. Happy Halloween!
