New University of Economics #1

With about 24.000 students from Austria and abroad, the Vienna University of Economics and Business is the EU’s largest educational institution for business and economics, business law, and social sciences. For years the old building has been to small for all these students, this autumn semester they will finally move into a new campus the 2nd district. The buildings located on the new campus have been designed by six architects of international repute. The one in the photo was designed by the Japanese Hitoshi Abe Studio.

Horses in The Park

Currently the famous white Lipizzaner stallions of the Spanish Riding School enjoy their summer break, instead the brood mares and their young foals of the Federal Stud Piber are in town and present their summer programme. The green nursery is located in Burggarten where the horses can be visited free of charge in the late afternoon. A nice attraction for tourists, children, but also locals.

Back to Normal

I was away for some days, but now I´m back to normal, and so I took a ride on my bicylce on the Danube Island as I always do on a sunny summer evening.

This building is located on the banks of the Danube and houses the river police. I discovered it last Friday during my bicycle tour through the 2nd district with Tourzentrale Wien.

Rails to Nowhere

Thanks to Tourzentrale Wien which offered a bicycle tour through the 2nd district yesterday evening, I learned a lot about my neighbourhood although I have been living here for more than 20 years. Amongst other things I discovered these rails on the area of the former Nordbahnhof (North Railway Station). Sooner or later they will disappear as the whole area will by covered by apartment buildings.

Tourzentrale Wien

If you want to watch the current Tour de France in company, Tourzentrale Wien is the place for you. It´s located on Vorgartenmarkt in the 2nd district and is run by young and very committed people.

Ganesha

This Ganesha is located in the Indian area of the Hirschstetten Flower Gardens.

It's Summer - Let's Sit Outside

Virginia Creeper

I love façades  covered with Virginia creeper. Recently I discovered this one in the city center. Unfortuntaley I couldn´t get closer and had to take the photo through a fence.

Eiffel Tower in Vienna

As I don't only love my hometown Vienna, but also Paris I just had to take a picture of this Eiffel Tower that decorates one of the many attractions at the Prater amusement park ;-)

Giant Ferris Wheel

The Wiener Riesenrad is a 64,75m/212ft tall Ferris wheel at the entrance of the Prater amusement park in the 2nd district. It was constructed in 1897 by the English engineer Lieutenant Walter Bassett Bassett to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Emperor Franz Joseph I. In 1916 a demolition permit was issued, but (fortunately) the Ferris Wheel was saved from destruction by a lack of money. 

Gazebo

There are several differently themed areas at the Hirschstetten Flower Gardens. This gazebo is located amidst beautiful summer flowers.

Flora

Flora, the goddess of flowers and the season of spring welcomes the visitors of the Hirschstetten Flower Gardens,  the cultivation gardens of the Municipal Department which is in charge of the Viennese parks and gardens.

Here´s another view of the modern Donau City in the 22nd district. There´s also the Reichsbrücke, one of Vienna´s busiest bridges, and a patrol boat, formerly used by the Austrian Armed Forces.

An Evening at the MuseumsQuartier

Pink Sushi

When the motto of a party is "la vie en pink", you don´t have to be surprised to find pink sushi at the buffet ;-)

La vie en pink

Last Thursday I attended the summer party of a company for fine art and exhibition logistics at a restaurant in the 19th district. The motto of the evening was "la vie en pink": all decorations were pink and a lot of people were even dressed in this colour.

Inside Out

I love it when the art exhibited at a gallery isn´t only visible behind closed doors, but also takes over the outside.

Balloon Heads

The department store "Steffl" in the city center recently started the series "Art meets Fashion" and presented these balloon heads, created by the young creative duo "Luftfabrik", in its windows.

Sunset - Last Saturday

I took this photo last Saturday, on my way home after my usual summer bicycle tour on the Danube Island. In the background you can see the hills of the Wienerwald (Vienna Woods) the building on the right is the Millennium Tower.

Put a Ship on Your Head

The windows and glass cubes of the Swarovski store in the city center are currently featuring the installation “All that glitters is gold" by the famous British milliner Philip Treacy. One of his creations is this "ship hat".

Looks Like New York

Well, I´ve never been to New York, but I´ve seen a lot of photos of the skyscrapers in this city and these office buildings in the 3rd district look rather similar to me.

Hundertwasser Pillar

Yesterday evening I went to see the Linda McCartney exhibition at KUNST HAUS WIEN. The museum is located in the former Thonet furniture factory in the 3rd district, remodelled by Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. A characteristic element of his archictecture are colourful pillars and the uneven floor. If you happen to be in Vienna until Ocotober 6, go see the exhibition - I can highly recommend it.

Rain in The City

As I told you already yesterdy, there's no summer in sight so far. It's still rainy and cold and the outdoor areas of the cafés are deserted, like here on Graben. For information about the Plague Column in the background please click here.

For the meteoroligsts summer started on June 1. Unfortunately they forgot to tell the weather to behave accordingly - it´s rainy and rather cool. The only sign of the new season is this figure in Stadtpark which represents summer. For spring please click here.
