Heracles Fighting Cerberus

There are a lot of sculptures in the gardens of Schönbrunn Palace. This one shows Heracles, the greatest hero in Greek mythology, fighting Cerberus, the three-headed hound which guarded the entrance to Hades, as well as the personified Vices, while beneath his feet lies the defeated Hydra, a many-headed water-snake.

Some time ago I showed you a first photo of the project "Central Art Station": The Austrian Federal Railways asked some street artists to spray their works onto the temporary walls that cover the construction area at the new central railway station. I Love Bright Colours

I love to photograph tables and chairs, especially so colourful ones like these. Last week we had cold and rainy weather, so the outdoor areas of the cafés and restaurants were deserted, but  this week the weather is expected to improve.

The last time I explored the new campus of the University of Economics and Business, these two chairs caught my eyes. They seem to be eagerly waiting for some students to take a seat.

A Piece of Brazil in Vienna

The Brazilian street artist Speto has covered 10 pillars  along the subway line 2 in the second district with a homage ("3 Brothers") to the Villas Bôas brothers and the narrative cultures of Brazil’s indigenous population. As pioneers, Leonardo, Orlando and Cláudio Villas Bôas took part in an extensive state-led expedition to colonize unexplored jungle areas in the mid-1940s. Deeply moved by their first encounters with the natives of the Amazon Basin, the three brothers became dedicated advocates of indigenous rights and environments. For their commitment, the brothers were nominated twice for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Peace Parade

Last Saturday I "stumbled upon" the Peace Parade that premiered in Vienna. The parade was intended as a demonstration for civil rights, freedom of assembly and peace and consisted of several trucks with loud music. This photo shows the last truck.
In completely other news, on Saturday evening, the Austrian singer Conchita Wurst won the Eurovision Song Contest 2014. This was Austria's first Eurovision win since 1966. Some people may find this "bearded lady" creepy, but please do have a look at her appearance by clicking here.

Fiaker

The term "fiaker" originates from the French and refers to the hackney carriage stand in the Rue de Saint Fiacre in Paris.  Between 1860 and 1900 more than 1.000 fiakers were on the road in Vienna. Even today the horse-drawn carriages are still a part of the cityscape, a ride with a fiaker is a higlight for many tourists.

Schönbrunn Orangery

Franz I Stephan, the husband of Empress Maria Theresia, instigated the building of the Schönbrunn orangery (the building behind the fountain in this photo) in 1754. It is one of the two largest Baroque orangeries in the world, the other being at Versailles. The orangery served not only as the winter quarters for citrus trees and other potted plants but was also a winter garden used for imperial court festivities. During a winter festivity in 1786 Mozart conducted his Singspiel "The Impresario" here.

Office Buildings

Office buildings in the "Viertel Zwei" area, a new quarter in the 2nd district, constructed in 2009/2010. I love this spot because whenever I go there it's very quiet. The offices on this side of the buildings are overlooking the horse racing track Krieau.

Men's Talk
