Young Athlete & City Hall
The bronze statue "The Young Athlete" in front of the Theseus Temple in Volksgarten and the City Hall in the background last Sunday late in the afternoon. It wasn't as chilly as it looks in this photo.

Vienna Ice World 2018
Currently the City Hall forms the backdrop of the "Vienna Ice World". There's not only an ice rink in front of the City Hall but also an ice path winding trough the City Hall park. Restaurateurs pamper sportspeople and onlookers with regional delicacies at various outdoor booths. The ice rink is open until March 4 from 10 am to 10 pm.

A Teddy Bear in the Subway
Last Saturday afternoon in the subway: a girl and her teddy bear.... I was wondering if she just received him as a gift or if she was on her way to present him to someone. Either way, he seemed to like the ride...

Sunday Flowers #255
"January, the first month of the year,
A perfect time to start all over again,
Changing energies and deserting old moods,
New beginnings, new attitudes." - Charmaine J. Forde

A Cup of...
To me tea is like a hug in a cup. And with the permanent gloominess I need a lot of "tea hugs"... Do you prefer tea or coffee?

Aesthetics of Change #2
This lady's suit was designed in 1963 by Viennese fashion designer Gertrud Höchsmann. She studied at the University of Applied Arts from 1920 to 1925 and was head of the fashion department from 1959 to 1972. She also owned a fashion house for forty years where my mother worked for a short period.

Aesthetics of Change #1
The exhibition "AESTHETICS OF CHANGE: 150 Years of the University of Applied Arts" at the MAK - Austrian Museum of Applied Arts/Contemporary Art casts a glance back onto 150 years of the University's history and dares also a look into the future. In 1867 the School of Arts and Crafts was established at the Royal Austrian Museum of Art and Industry (today's MAK) to enable Austrian arts and crafts to compete internationally. This school is the antecedent institution of today's University of Applied Arts Vienna.
I was especially interested in the (small) part of the exhibition dedicated to the University's fashion department. The black and white skirt in this photo was a part of a dance costume and designed by Oskar Kokoschka in 1907/08. Kokoschka studied at the University of Applied Arts from 1904 to1909 and then teached there in 1912/13.

New Collection
While winter sale is still going on, the new collections are already arriving. One of the new trend colors is "arcadia". According to the Pantone Color Institute it's a "cooler, cleaner take on green. Its tinge of blue undertone takes us into a new direction for the spring 2018 season". If you want to know the other top colors of the coming season please click here.

Café Prückel
The Café Prückel was opened in 1903 under the name "Café Lurion" and quickly got a popular meeting place. In the 1950s the café was refurbished according to the taste of the time. Since then the furniture hasn't changed, the café still features an intact 1950s design. After all the recent gloomy days the white, red and yellow lights of the café catched my eyes when I passed there Sunday evening.

The Remains of the Snow
Yesterday morning Vienna was covered with a thin snow blanket. When I did my afternoon walk along the Old Danube the snow was nearly gone...

Deserted Bathing Platform
During the warm season the bathing platforms along the Old Danube are also popular spots for picnics, but currently they are deserted. I'm so sick of the still lasting gloom, I can't wait for spring!

Afternoon Walk on a Gloomy Day
I love to go for an afternoon walk on Sundays and holidays, even if the weather isn't too inviting... Last Saturday I first passed Donaucity, then the adjacent Donaupark.

Walking Hand in Hand
The first day of the new year I climbed the Kahlenberg. It was a very nice walk despite the clouds. While most people were still recovering from New Year's Eve, I enjoyed the silence and the empty paths. For a little while this couple walked in front of me hand in hand...

Donauturm in The Fog
We had a very foggy afternoon on yesterday's holiday (The Three Magi). I still did a walk and passed by the 252m high Donauturm, erected in 1964 on the occasion of the Vienna International Garden Show.

Sunny End of the Year
It is a tradition of mine to do the last walk of the year along the Old Danube. The day started very cloudy, but fortunately the sun came out in the afternoon. I really enjoyed my walk!

January Theme Day: Photo of the Year
Last year at this time of the year it was so cold that the Old Danube was frozen over and people walked and skated on the ice. As I had never seen this before and I am "a little" obsessed with sunsets, I chose this photo as photo of the year 2017.
