University of Vienna - The Old Chemical Institute

The Old Chemical Institute of the University of Vienna was designed by Heinrich von Ferstel in the historicist style and erected from 1869 to 1872. Today it houses the Center of Pathobiochemistry and Genetics of the Medical University of Vienna.

Palais Ferstel #8

The Palais Ferstel in the city center was created by Heinrich von Ferstel in the late 1850s. At the time of its opening, it was considered as Vienna's "most up-to date" building. The palace briefly housed the Vienna Stock Exchange and the Austro-Hungarian National Bank. Nowadays there's a small, but very beautiful shopping arcade.

Gomperz Palace

This historicist palace on Ringstrasse was built in 1860/61 and purchased by the brothers Max and Julius Gomperz, at that time succesful bankers . The statues on the second floor symbolize the four muses (dance, poetry, painting, music).

The Szechenyi Palace was built in 1896 in the historicist style for Baron Albert von Schloissnig. As of 1927 it was for a long time in possession of the Hungarian countess Marta Széchényi. Nowadays it houses a carpet store. I love the decorations of the façade, especially the atlantes.

Outstanding Façade

This building on Schottenring, constructed in the historicist style, is one of the first works (1877) of Otto Wagner (1841-1918), the most important Austrian architect and urban planner of Vienna of the Belle Époque. With its multi-coloured facade this edifice really stands out from the adjacent buildings.
