Easter Market on Freyung

At the moment there are four Easter markets in Vienna - this photo was taken on the "Traditional Viennese Easter Market" on Freyung in the first district. It offers more than 40.000 easter eggs, easter decorations and easter snacks from Austrian provinces. There are also concerts and a handicraft workshop for children.
Until Easter Monday I will give you some impressions of what you can find on the Easter markets. Stay tuned!

Town hall by night

The town hall was designed in the gothic style by Friedrich von Schmidt and built between 1872 and 1883. The figure on top of the tower is called "Rathausmann" and one of the symbols of Vienna.

Liechtenstein Museum #1

At the Liechtenstein Museum the Princely House of Liechtenstein, one of Europe´s oldest families of noble lineage, presents a large part of its collection of European works of baroque art (Rubens, van Dyck, Raphael, Rembrandt etc.). In the final days of the Second World War the collection has been taken to safety in Vaduz, the capital of the principality of Liechtenstein. The museum was reopened in March 2004.

Private view

Here´s a glimpse of yesterday´s private view of the Michel Comte exhibition in a photo gallery in the city center. The gallery was really crowded, amongst the guests there has been of course a number of local celebrities.

New exhibition in town

Tonight the first extensive exhibition in Austria of Swiss fashion and celebrity photographer Michel Comte will be inaugurated in a rather new photo gallery in the first district. And I will be there! I´m very much looking forward to this event!

Café Central

The Café Central in Palais Ferstel was opened in 1876 and soon became the meeting point of academics and artists (Sigmund Freud, Arthur Schnitzler, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Peter Altenberg,...)

Springtime decoration

It seems that finally springtime has arrived in Vienna! The windows of this flower shop have been decorated like this already some weeks ago, but only now I feel to publish this photo without speaking to soon.

Minorite Church - Detail

Minorite Church

The foundation stone of Minorite Church (or Greyfriars Church) was laid in 1276. The whole building follows the pattern of French Cathedral architecture - it was one of the first Gothic churches in the east-Austrian area.

Federal Chancellery

The ceremonial laying of the foundation stone for the building on Ballhausplatz (next to the Imperial Palace) took place on September 17, 1717. It was built by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt who had already designed the Belvedere Castle (the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy).

Imperial Palace

Until 1918 the Imperial Palace was the political centre of the Austrian monarchy. Here Emperor Joseph II drew up his revolutionary programme of reforms, the Congress of Vienna met and danced and Emperor Franz Joseph held audiences. Today it houses not only the offices of the Federal President, the ministers of the chancellor´s office and the secretaries of state but also the Imperial Apartments, the Imperial Silver Collection and the Sisi Museum - three absolute must-sees for tourists.
