Bicycle Girl

As I love to ride my bicycle this sign of course caught my eyes. It's the logo of a bicycle store in the 4th district which sells only dutch citybikes (click here for the english website).

Organic Renaissance of Art Nouveau

The department store "Steffl" consistently engages young artists to create the window displays. The Viennese illustrator and graphic designer Nora Groth chose the graphics of the Art Nouveau style as her source of inspiration for the current display. Click here for a short video of the unveiling.

Oktoberfest Cake

In Munich, Germany, currently the "Oktoberfest" is going on: a 16-day fair where visitors enjoy beer (brewed within the city limits of Munich) and traditional food. Some days ago I discovered this cute Oktoberfest cake in the window of a confectionary in the city center.

Urban Gardening #7

You don't need your bedframe any more? No problem, just put it in a community garden.

Urban Gardening #6

Gardening in the city seems really to be a new trend: During my last walk in the 7th district I stumbled upon another community garden. It was created last spring - as the two other gardens that I discovered recently - and can´t be overseen thanks to this drawing. It's fun to see the different "styles" of these gardens...

Two Young Men

These two young men caught my eyes yesterday because of their very different styles of clothing. I guess the boy on the left side was dressed for the Viennese version of the "Oktoberfest" that´s currently going on. Normally young people don't dress this way in the city...

September days are here,
With summer’s best of weather
And autumn’s best of cheer." -

Rainy Days

The past few days have been very autumnal and rainy... Have I already mentioned that I don't like autumn at all?  Looking at these colourful tables and chairs cheered me up a little...

New University of Economics #2

Some days ago I explored the brand-new campus of the University of Economics and Business in the 2nd district. As I told you already here the buildings have been designed by six architects of international repute. Therefore the six groups of buildings look very different. The Library & Learning Center in this photo was designed by the famous Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid.

Stadtlesen 2013

The past weekend the MuseumsQuartierWien hosted the project "Stadtlesen" again: an annual "reading pleasure tour" travelling through the country and turning popular locations into outdoor reading rooms where bookworms can choose from 5.000 books from a variety of genres and enjoy a good read in a relaxed environment free of charge. A great idea!

Espresso Mobil

I wanted to see the "Espresso Mobil" ever since I first read about it last year. On Sunday, at the "Buskers Festival" on Karlsplatz, finally my wish came true. The "Espresso Mobil" is an Ape Car specially designed to hold, within it, Vienna’s first mobile coffee shop. There are five fixed locations in Vienna, but the coffee-to-go cars are also present at events, and you can even rent one for your own event.

Buskers Festival

Last weekend the third Vienna Street Art Festival ("Buskers Festival") took place on Karlsplatz. Artists from across Europe presented their wide-ranging repertoires at the open-air spectacle: musicians and drummers, fire artists, acrobats, pantomimes, jugglers, magicians, break-dancers... As today every good street artist has a website, I can tell you that the artist in this photo, Murray Mollow, has been performing all over the world for more than fifteen years and is one of less than fifty artists sufficiently trained to swallow swords currently performing in the world.

Yellow Storefront

In Vienna you rarely see such bright coloured storefronts. It's a pity, I think this one looks great.

Mölkerstiege

The Mölkerstiege is located in the city center and leads up to the Mölker Bastei which is a former part of the Viennese bastions and was built in 1536, then later rebuilt in 1656 and worn out from 1861 to 1872.

The Last Days...

I don't even want to think about autumn, but fact is that the days we can enjoy the outdoor areas of the restaurants and cafés are numbered.

The Sky over Vienna #2

Sunday before last I enjoyed the calm atmosphere in Augarten under a sky that looked like this.

Summer Wrapping

For the traditional wrapping of the Ringturm during summertime this year the work "Ties" by the Slovak artist Dorota Sadovská was chosen. For photos of former wrappings please click here and here.

Sunday Flowers #88

"A flower's appeal is in its contradictions - so delicate in form yet strong in fragrance, so small in size yet big in beauty, so short in life yet long on effect." - Adabella Radici

Hurray

These three sculptures in front of the design tower in the second district seem to be happy that it's weekend.

Urban Gardening #5

During my recent walk on the banks of the Danube canal I discovered another community garden. It looks much more improvisational than the one close to my place, but I like it anyway.

The Frog on The Wall

On the banks of the Danube Canal there are some walls where graffiti artists are officially allowed to spray their works. To be honest, most of them aren't really worth seeing, but this frog stood out. Please click here for another frog graffito from last year.

Danube Canal

The Danube Canal emerged from the regulation of the Danube between 1870 to 1875. It is the southernmost original arm of the Danube in Vienna, 17,3 km long in its present-day form, and flows past the city center. In recent years the banks of the canal have been transformed in an attractive recreational summer area with several outdoor bars.

The End of The Laziness

Summer Holidays are over. Today more than 200.000 Viennese pupils start a new school year and the bigger part of the working population returns to work. No more hanging out in deck-chairs during the day...
