Pink Car

The current window display of the K. u. K. (Imperial and Royal) Confectionary Demel was inspired by the exhibition project "Sagmeister & Walsh: Beauty" at the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts. The exhibition investigates why people feel attracted to beauty, how they can deal with it and which positive effects beauty can have. I haven't yet seen the exhibition, so I dont't know which role plays this pink car, but it's definitely an eye-catcher.

8th Blogiversary!

Today this blog turns 8!!! When I published the first photo I never would have thought to keep the blog up for such a long time. Sometimes blogging is fun, but sometimes it's also stressful and I don't always manage to publish the photos in due time. But I love how I started to see my hometown in a different, more attentive way thanks to this blog. Thank you for your support by visiting my blog and commenting on the photos!! I'm looking forward to sharing more photos of Vienna with you! How about starting the new blogyear with a coffee party? (Unfortunately the sweets and coffee in this photo are not "real", but only the decoration in the window of the confectionary Demel in the city center.)

Christmas Cookies

When I was a child a highlight of the Advent season was the baking of Christmas cookies with my mother. I haven't baked cookies for years, but I still like to eat them and luckily my mother still bakes a variety of cookies...

Demel's Summer Display

The current display of the K. u. K. (Imperial and Royal) Court Confectionary Bakery "Demel" shows three huge sundaes. The confectionary doesn't only sell cakes and other desserts, but also ice cream. Well, actually in the very beginning Demel was an ice cream parlor and gradually extended its range of products. I have never tasted Demel's ice cream... Does that mean that I am a bad Viennese?

2nd Sunday of Advent

In Austria today is not only the 2nd Sunday of Advent, but also Saint Nicholas Day. During the night Saint Nicholas filled the children's boots with gifts and sweets, and at the same time checked up on the children if they were good, polite and helpful last year. Saint Nicholas is usually accompanied by Krampus, a demon-like creature warning and punishing bad children. If the children were not good, he puts a tree branch in their boots. The K. u. K. Court Confectionary Bakery Demel  shows the "team" in one of its windows. Click here for Austrian actor Christoph Waltz's explanation of Krampus.

Let's Celebrate And Eat Cake

Today this blog turns 5!! I really wouldn't have thought it when I published the first photo in 2010. Back then I didn't know what I was doing, I just wanted to give this blog thing a try. I doubted that I would find enough interesting photo subjects to continue the blog for a whole year, but then I started to see things that I have ignored or taken for granted before. I woud like to thank everybody who has ever visited my blog and especially those who left a comment. I appreciate your support and I am looking forward to sharing more photos of my hometown. And now, let's eat some "Demel" cake!

Vanillekipferl

Vanillekipferl are small, crescent shaped biscuits, usually made with ground almonds or hazelnuts, flavoured with vanilla and dusted with powdered sugar. They are traditionally made at Christmas. In the window of the K. und K. (Imperial and Royal) Court Confectionary Bakery "Demel" they are presented in a very special way.
